TheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)estimatesmorethan400millionconsumerelectronicitemsaredumpedeachyear,andthereisapushbymorestatestobanthewastefromlandfills(垃圾填埋场)andcreaterecyclingprograms.Theycanbetornapartandsortedforuseableparts.MikeFannonwhorunstheplantinBaltimoresays,“Therearelotsofvaluablemetalsthatcanberecoveredandreusedinsteadofjustputtingtheminthelandfill,andincertaincomponentstherearesomematerialsthatshouldnotreallybeinthelandfill.”
Fannonsaysnearly20percentofelectronicwasteisrecyclednationwide.Thirteenyearsago,itwasonlyabout6percent.Recyclingratescontinuetoriseasmorecommunitieshavebannedelectronicsfromlandfillsinordertokeepe－wastepoisonslikelead(铅)andmercury(汞)outofgarbagedumps.
ThisyearseveralstateslikeVermontimposedabanonelectronicwasteinlandfills.Morethan25otherstateshavealsoadoptedbansone－wasteinlandfills.ChazMillersaysmorecanbedonetoboostelectronicwasterecycling.
