Revision of grammar in Book 1: Attributive Clauses

Teaching objectives:
Through this lesson, students are able to
1. Go over basic grammatical rules of the usage of attributive clauses.
2. Get to know the difference between that and which; the different usage of relative pronouns and relative adverbs.
3. Solve difficulties with the usage of attributive clauses.
4. Improve their language skills, especially writing, by using attributive clauses.
Teaching difficulties and focuses:
1. Students know clearly the differences between that and which; the different usage
of relative pronouns and relative adverbs.
2. Students solve the difficulties in doing grammar exercises in attributive clauses.
3. How to improve writing by using attributive clauses.
Teaching methods:
Problem-solving; Analysis of difficulties; Learning through practice.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in (Aguessinggame)
Through the game students are asked to make a guess by understanding sentences containing attributive clauses.
Step 2 Revision
Students are asked some questions about grammatical rules of attributive clause.
1) Usage of relative pronouns(which, that, whose, who, whom ) and relative
adverbs( when, where, why ).
2) Differences between that and which.
3) Differences between relative pronouns and relative adverbs.

Step 3 Diagnosis exercises
Students are asked to finish sentences by filling in relative pronouns and relative adverbs.
The teacher explains any difficulties that occur in students’ work.
Step 4 Practice 1 (Multiple choices)
Students are required to make correct choices. It is designed to check how well students understand usage of attributive clauses.
Step 5 Practice 2 (Blank-filling)
Students are asked to fill in blanks a passage about the famous athlete Ning Zetao, using relative pronouns , relative adverbs or prep+relative pronouns.
Step 6 Practice 3 (Correct mistakes)
Students are asked to read a letter and find out the mistakes with usage of attributive clauses in it; then correct them.
Step 7 Practice4 (Rewrite a passage )
Students are able to read a passage about the Nobel Prize winner Tu Youyou and improve the writing of it by rewrite it by using attributive clauses.
Step 8 Consolidation
Students are asked to write a short passage about 70 words. This is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of usage of attributive clauses.
