One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap.
On September 11th. 1958. Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying. “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. 1 told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming. “Don’t expect any presents this year.” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. “If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before. The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. “What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs.” The hospital said we can bring Richard home!”
“Thank God.” I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them that happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll
would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in overcoming the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of his friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.
3
Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.
The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. “Maybe I could go as Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume (戏装), but finally she agreed.
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation. The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
It doesn’t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, next time you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.
25. What do we know about Tom?
A. He was seriously ill B. He was a dishonest boy.
C. He was crazy about magic. D. He was Dr. Epstein’s patient.
26. What can be inferred about Tom’s mother?
A. She was a rich lady.
B. She refused Tom’s request.
C. She wanted Tom to be a superhero.
D. She wanted to get Tom through the pain.
27. In the last paragraph, you are advised ______.
A. to go through some difficult tests
B. to wake up from your wild dreams
C. to become a powerful person in your mind
D. to wear expensive clothes for job interviews
28. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell us an interesting story.
B. To help us make right decisions.
C. To advise us to care about children.
D. To encourage us to use our imagination.
C
It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a
brilliantly (精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people 4
have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams from My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor
Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to.
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).
29. By lying about reading, a person hopes to_________.
A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable
C. learn about the book D. make more friends
30. In the sentenced “I’d hate to be caught out”, “catch out” can have the similar meaning with ____.
A.catch up B.search for C.put up D.find out
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Are You a Book Liar?
B. Readers Are All Liars
C. World Book Day
D. Dreams from My Father
32. What is the author’s attitude to 58% of readers?
A. Supportive B. Uncaring C. Doubtful D. Friendly
D
In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老)treated the poor message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However,if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off. Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand,a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said,”Oh boy,bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, for his smile.
Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile,”Oh that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of head-cutting!
It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with
which it’s delivered(递送). Big winners know,when delivering any bad news,they 5
should share the feeling of the receiver.
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy(同情),I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left,I probably would have said,”Oh,that’s all right I’ll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轰炸的)person is sure to have.
33. In Paragraph 1,the writer tells the story of the pharaoh to ____.
A. make a comparison B. introduce a topic
C. describe a scene D. offer an argument
34. In the writer’s opinion,his neighbor was ___.
A. friendly B. warm-hearted C. not caringD. not helpful
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Delivering bad news properly is important in communication.
B. Helping others sincerely is the key to business success.
C. Receiving bad news requires great courage.
D. Learning ancient traditions can be useful.
