“You are the comfort of my life, Effie. If you make up your mind to go away, what is to become of me?”

“What shall I do without you, and what will your father say?”
高考提分,学霸之路 www.99jianzhu.com
“I have made up my mind,” said Effie. “I don?t want to be unkind to you, mother,—I love you more than words can say,—but I must go out into the world. I must live my life like other girls.”
“You had none of these ideas until you met Dorothy.”
“Yes, I have had them for a long time; Dorothy has given them emphasis. That?s all. Before I go, mother, I will get Agnes to learn all my duties; she shall help you.”
“She would not be like you,” replied Mrs. Staunton. “She is very young, remember, and is at school most of the day.”
Effie sighed. She bent down and kissed her mother.
“You do not know what it means to me,” she said. “When Dorothy talks of the full life, the keen interest, the battle, the thrill of living, I feel that I must go into it—I must. You are sending George out into the world to win his spurs, and I am going to win mine.”
“In what way?” asked Mrs. Staunton. “You know you are not clever.”
“Dorothy thinks I can be a nurse, mother. May she come and see you, and talk it all over?”
“What is the use of my seeing her? Your father is the one to decide.”
“I shall be a greater comfort to you when I send you money from London. Now, don?t speak another word. I will put the children to bed, and I will look after baby myself, while you close your eyes and go to sleep.”

The FBI announced on Monday that it had successfully hacked (入侵) into an iPhone used by a gunman responsible for a mass shooting in California. The announcement left tech giant Apple Inc. wondering about the security of one of its key products. And the FBI will not tell how it got past the locks.
The news ends a legal battle that began more than a month ago, when the FBI got a court order from a federal judge demanding that Apple help them to access the data on the phone. The phone had belonged to Farook. On December 2, 2015, Farook and Malik killed 14 people and wounded 22 others in San Bernardino, California. The two were killed a few hours after the attack. The next day, an FBI team found Farook?s iPhone 5c in the car. When investigators turned on the phone, it asked them to enter a four-digit pass code. The phone was set to erase all of its data after 10 incorrect guesses. Not even Apple, the company that made the phone, had the code. The FBI asked Apple to help them get access to the information stored in the phone.
高考提分,学霸之路 www.99jianzhu.com
Apple helped the FBI with its investigation, but only to a certain point. The FBI then asked Apple to create a new version of the phone?s operating system, one without the 10-guess limit. But Apple refused. Cook argued that if Apple created a tool to hack into an iPhone, and that tool got into the wrong hands, the security of every iPhone would be at risk.
Cook noted that people store “an incredible amount of personal information” on their iPhones. “That information,” he said, “needs to be protected from hackers and criminals. While we believe the FBI?s intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products.”
On March 21, the FBI announced that an “outside party” had come forward with a possible way to break into the phone. Now, having confirmed that the code has been cracked, the FBI has dropped the legal battle with Apple.
25. The FBI wants to gain access to the phone to ________.
A. locate Farook and arrest him
B. monitor Farook and his teammates D. help create an operating system C. update D. replace C. get the information stored in it A. restore B. delete 26. The underlined word “erase” may be closest in meaning to ________.
27. Cook refused to help the FBI for fear that ________.
A. the FBI will know how to establish the operating system
B. Apple will lose the battle against the FBI
C. Apple?s users will know the producer has no codes
D. it may cause security problems for the iPhone users
28. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Legal Battle Between Apple and FBI
C. Security Concerns of Apple B. Worst Terrorist Ever in History D. Apple Helps FBI in Fighting Terrorism C The British Museum believes in making its collections widely available. Usually, when you quit a job, you don?t expect your former employer?s parting gift.
Well, at least some employees at a company have walked away with a large amount of money on their way to new opportunities. Bloomberg reports that an online store Adore Me—founded in 2011 and based in New York—has handed a few departing employees a check for $10,000. In one case, an employee was leaving the company to spend time traveling, while another left to move across the country. Therefore, it?s not like they were leaving to work for a major competitor, like Victoria?s Secret.
Why aren?t more Adore Me employees quitting to take advantage of the big payout? Bloomberg notes that the departure check is only provided on certain occasions, so there is no guarantee that leaving the company will come with a $10,000 parting gift. Adore Me?s CEO, Morgan, told Bloomberg that the payouts provide a chance to some employees to stay with a company that is so kind to workers who, the CEO says, put in a lot of hard work and effort. Meanwhile, potential employees may also be attracted to the company after hearing news of its generous parting gifts.
It?s unclear how well Adore Me?s strategy (策略) of handing out checks to former employees will work when it comes to keeping and inspiring current workers, much less whether it will help attract new talents.
The start-up isn?t the first to try this practice. Earlier this year, e-commerce company Boxed created a non-profit to cover the college tuition of its employees? children, while another company has used rewards from its corporate (公司的) credit cards to pay for employees? personal travel.

34. What the CEO of Adore Me implies that ________.
A. one of their purposes is to attract potential employees

Dear Mr. Principal,
the Chinese students in PE classes. I suggest that your school should organize a first aid course, which is very useful.
The reasons why a first aid course is necessary are as follows: we students are lack of first aid knowledge. A first aid course can satisfy our needs of first aid knowledge. Besides, it will give information about many more situations and give us the chance to practise first aid treatments.
As for the course, it can be given monthly. The course should mainly concern the practice of first aid 高考提分,学霸之路 www.99jianzhu.com
treatments. It couldn?t be better if the experts in first aid were introduced to instruct the course.

M: Thanks for the invite, Valerie, but I?ll have to pass. My knees are very sore from running all week. W: Oh, okay. Some other time.
Text3.
M: Where are you from?
M: I was born in China, but I moved to the States in 1990 when I was seven years old.
W: That was more than 20 years ago. Can you still speak Chinese?
M: Yes, very well. I speak Chinese at home with some of my older relatives.
Text4.
M: Why is it so cold today? I thought the weather report said it was supposed to be sunny and warm…
M: Well, it is supposed to be nice later this afternoon. The fog should burn off by lunchtime and this wind should die down, too.

W: Are any of the characters in the books based on real people?
M: Good question! The answer is yes and no. I have to say that Hermione Granger is a little bit like I was at her age, though I was neither as clever nor as annoying. Ron is a little bit like my oldest friend, and Professor Snape is a lot like one of my old teachers.
W: How long have you been writing?
M: Nearly all my life. I had written two novels before I had the idea for Harry Potter, though I?d never tried to get them published.
Text 8.

W: Brown beans on the steak ones, and black beans on the chicken ones, please.
M: Ok, and you said hot sauce, right?
W: Yes, but don?t put too much on there. A little goes a long way.
M: No problem. Any chips or drinks?

M: Have you ever played dodge ball?
W: No, I have never heard of it. Is it an American sport?
M: Yes, but it is not played professionally. It?s more of a kids? game.
W: Oh, I understand. How do you play?
M: Well like in tennis, you have a court with two sides. You start out with a bunch of balls in the middle of the court. When the whistle blows , you run and try to grab a ball to throw at someone, or you can stand back to defend yourself.
W: How do you defend yourself?
M: Well, if a person throws a ball at you, you either don?t let the ball hit you, or you can catch the ball, which means the person who threw the ball is out and has to leave the court.
W: And what happens if the ball hits you?
M: You?re out.
W: Is it a dangerous game?
M: Not really. The balls are made of rubber, but some kids can throw very fast, and if a ball hits you in the face, it?s not pleasant. W: How do you win the game? M: Well, the game ends when one side has no more players left, and the other team wins.
W: It sounds fun.

If you have to get up for any reason, please do so as quickly and quietly as possible. Please make sure your cell phones are turned all the way off, not just with the sound turned down. Smoking or drinking alcohol isn?t allowed anywhere in the theater, and bringing in outside food and drinks is also prohibited. You are welcome to visit our snack bar. Please make seats on the outside of all rows available to seniors and guests with disabilities. Feel free to save as many extra seats for your friends or family as you want, but be aware that if another group arrives, you?ll be expected to allow them to sit in those seats if they want to. While the movie is playing, please do not make unnecessary noise. Everyone in the theater has paid to get in, and they all deserve to enjoy the movie. If you fail to observe any of these rules, we?ll have to ask you to leave the theater without a refund. If there is an emergency, you should make your way to the nearest emergency exit safely. Ok, the show is now about to begin, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your time here at the Grand River Theater.
