A
It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and rehearsed (practiced) all the answers: ―I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven‘t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It‘s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.‖ I also wondered if it was the custom for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.
No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say ―hello‖, but no one spoke to me. When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all the curiosity my arrival aroused.
My teacher was called Mr Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens‘ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: ―Timbuktu‖, and Mr Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: ―Portsmouth‖, and everyone stared at me because Mr Jones said I was right. This didn‘t make me very popular, of course.
―He thinks he‘s clever,‖ I heard Brian say.
After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian‘s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
―He‘s big enough and useless enough,‖ Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me. I suppose Mr Jones remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the players on the other team, and he gave them a penalty. As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down instinctively and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
―Do you want to join my gang (team)?‖ he said.
At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

About 21,000 young people in 17 American states do not attend classes in school buildings.
Instead, they receive their elementary(初等)and high school education by working at home on computers. The Center for Education Reform says the United States has 67 public ―cyberschools.‖and that is about twice as many as two years ago.
The money for students to attend a cyberschool comes from the governments of the states where they live. Some educators say cyberschools receive money that should support traditional public schools. They also say it is difficult to know if students are learning well.
Other educators praise this new form of education for letting students work at their own speed. These people say cyberschools help students who were unhappy or unsuccessful in traditional schools. They say learning at home by computer ends long bus rides for children who live far from school.
Whatever the judgement of cyberschools, they are getting more and more popular. For example, a new cyberschool called Commonwealth Connections Academy will take in students this fall. It will serve children in the state of Pennsylvania from ages five through thirteen.
Children get free equipment for their online education. This includes a computer,a printer, books and technical services. Parents and students talk with teachers by telephone or by sending emails through their computers when necessary.
Students at cyberschools usually do not know one another. But 56 such students who finished studies at Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School recently met for the first time. They were guests of honor at their graduation.

Good Mistakes
David Balch
It's good to make mistake, and here is why. First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It's always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? How can you innovate? The simple answer is "You can't".Look around you. With very few exceptions, either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new. Another good thing about mistakes is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10000 times before he perfected the light bulb. when asked how it felt to fail that many times, he remarked that he hadn't failed 10000 times, but rather had learned 10000 things that didn't work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why?
Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some finite number of things before you succeeded, every time you made a mistake you eliminated one of those things and are one step closer.
But this all doesn't mean that you should forge ahead with disregard for the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn't work out the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again.
We all have limited resources in the form of time and money so don't blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won't be perfect the first time and allocate these resources appropriately so you can learn, modify, and try it again. Only by embracing and using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your business and your career.
There is an old saying that goes, "If you're not making mistakes, you're not trying hard enough."
So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And prosper.
49.According to the writer, what are the reasons for arguing for the fact that mistakes are good?

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn‘t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can‘t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore (不理睬) everyone. Even if you just say ―Hi‖, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
If you looked up the word ―communication‖ in a dictionary, it would say ―the exchange of ideas, the conveyance(表达)of information, correspondence(通信), means of communication: a letter or a message‖. To maintain (保持) a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it‘s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you‘ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse. This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn‘t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, not when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren‘t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie‘s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn‘t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie‘s, telling the other person how you feel---listening is the key factor to communication.
41. In the writer‘s view, dealing with parents is __________ than with children.
A. more difficult B. easier C. more uninteresting D. more interesting
42. The main idea of the second paragraph is __________.
A. the importance of friendship B. to make your feeling known to others
C. the importance of communicationD. the disagreement between generations
43. When parents and children are in communication, the key to a happy relationship is that __________.
A. children should always obey their parents B. they should be equal
C. parents play the leading part D. both make the opposite know their feelings
44. The example in this passage proves that ___________.
A. Sophie‘s parents are willing to listen to her B. Sophie is very polite to her parents
C. Sophie did well in explaining her being late D. communication is the solution to misunderstanding

thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观
点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.
With this unshakable belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful.
Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write
without loving to read, because only through reading other people‘s writing can one discover what works,
what doesn‘t and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文学作品). As a law
student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter—the volume (量) of what I have to read for
classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to
me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is
life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the
comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't
necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.
45. What can be inferred about the author as a child?
A. He never watched TV. B. He read what he had to.
C. He found reading unbelievable. D. He considered reading part of his life.
46. The underlined word ―voice‖ in the second paragraph most probably means ―
A. an ideaB. a sound quality C. a way of writing
47. What effect does reading have on the author?
A. It helps him to realize his dream. B. It opens up a wider world for him.
C. It makes his college life more interesting. D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.
48. Which of the following can be the best title of this text?
A. Why do I read? B. How do I read? C. What do I read? D. When do I read?

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called ―Brownie‖. My brothers and I all
loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then
there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of
us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with
them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad‘s shoes, which had to be thrown
away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I
looked at her and said, ―Bad girl,‖ she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in
her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us. People would
stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she‘d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog.
There were many times when we‘d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her
hair. She never barked (吠) or tried to get away. The funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened
people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.
