My taxi driver pressed hard on his , and at the very last moment our car stopped and the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, looked around and started at us.
My taxi driver just and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was , so I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call "The Law of the Garbage Truck".
He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of , anger and disappointment. As their garbage up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on . Don’t take it personally; just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Believe me. You’ll be .”

A
One day when I was 5, my mother scolded me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door with my foot, I had kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.
Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have scolded my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. They never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a breach (裂缝) in the defense against unwanted insects.
For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly remind me of my mistake. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insect entered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Above all, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.

Breathe, wave and smile. Along with more than 300 other seniors, I marched into the stadium on the afternoon of May 10. The audience burst into deafening cheers. The huge stadium shook with all the whistling and clapping.
It was as if a Hollywood superstar had walked on stage. And indeed, every single senior that day was a star of the moment. Each deserved it. The seniors had been preparing for four years for this once-in-a-lifetime moment—the graduation ceremony.
Seated, I waited anxiously for the opening speech. As a foreign exchange student, I was not able to receive a diploma. However, I still had the wonderful feeling of being part of things. Like the other graduates, I was dressed in maroon(紫褐色)cap and gown.
Our principal, Mr. Glover, delivered a short, warm greeting. The US national anthem followed and then, hands on chests, a solemn Pledge of Allegiance (效忠誓言).
Students who had done well academically gave farewell speeches. The tears in some eyes convinced me that many had deep feelings about the occasion. It was as the class motto says,“Life brings us tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry; the smiles fade; but the memories last forever.”
Then came the most important part of the ceremony. Hundreds of names were announced. Each graduate walked across the stage to receive his or her diploma from the principal. From the different cheers each graduate got, we had the funny sense that it was a kind of competition of who could cheer the loudest.
To be honest, the presentation of diplomas got boring. A girl sitting next to me even started yawning. But it wasn’t boring for those receiving the diploma: they would treasure the moment the principal placed the sacred brown document in their hands for the rest of their lives.
A new page in the book of that person’s life had turned. They were glimpsing (开始领悟) their futures: Futures of challenge, hardship, perhaps loneliness too, which would take all of their courage.

Using tablet computers like Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Note just before bed can lead to a poor night’s sleep, according to research.
More and more people are taking their tablets to bed with them to surf the web, check Facebook or email before switching off the light. But researchers are warning that the blueish light their screens give off can stop users getting a good night’s sleep. That is because this type of light is like daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime. Blue light brain chemical called melatonin (褪黑激素), which helps us fall asleep. This is because our brains have evolved to be wakeful during daylight hours. By contrast, light which is more orange or red in tone does not reduce melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a hint that the day is ending.
Neurologists (神经病学家) have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can disturb sleep. Researchers are warning that looking at tablet displays for more than two hours“leads to a suppression of our natural melatonin levels as the devices give off optical radiation (光辐射) at short wavelengths”— in other words, they give off bluer light.
They say:“Although turning off devices at night is the ultimate solution, it is recommended that if these devices are used at night, displays are dimmed as much as possible and that the time spent on them before bed should be limited.”
They drew their conclusions after measuring melatonin levels in 13 volunteers, after they had spent time viewing iPads at full brightness at a distance of 10 inches, for two hours. Melatonin levels were significantly lower after they had done this, than they were after the volunteers had viewed their iPads for the same time, but while wearing orange glass goggles(护目镜), which cut out the blue light.
It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be damaged by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that continuous disturbance to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity, and even breast cancer.

Lots of people give you advice on overcoming fear. ___51___ However, I want to tell you that a world without fear would be more dangerous. So we want to treat fear as a friend. Here are three reasons.
___52 ___ Think about it. Do you get more nervous when you meet the girl (or guy) of your dreams? Which is more fearful, talking to the boss of your company or to some of your friends? Finally, fear lets you know you are alive. Why do we like roller coasters (过山车)? ___54___ Same for horror movies.
So fear can guide you towards what’s important for you and encourage you to take action to improve. ___55___

B. It frightens us in a mostly safe way.
C. Imagine what life would be like without fear.
