8 Vaccines for Shanghai Living

According to Dr. Robert Kohlbacher, Family Medicine at ParkwayHealth ,Vaccinations are a lot like homeowners insurance - it's a good idea to take out your policy before your house catches on fire. This article will address some of the most essential vaccines for life in Shanghai.

1. Influenza

Influenza (the flu) is a viral illness caused by a number of closely related viruses. It often occurs as a mini epidemic in temperate climates. In the Northern hemisphere, November through March is peak flu season. The flu vaccine is very important for life in Shanghai. Everyone should get this vaccine every year. October through early December is the best time to vaccinate. This vaccine is extremely safe and is reformulated annually to try to cover for the most common flu strains for the coming year. At present there is no available vaccine for either swine flu (H1N1) or avian flu.

2. Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral illness that is primarily transmitted through activities that result in exposure to blood. It is also transmitted sexually and probably in other ways that are not clearly understood. This vaccine is recommended for everyone living in Asia and especially in China where 130 million people are chronic carriers of the Hepatitis B virus. The Hepatitis B vaccine is very safe and is given as a 3 dose series at 0, 1 and 6 months. It should be boosted every 10 years.

3. Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral illness transmitted through contaminated food and water and is extremely easy to contract. This vaccine is important for anyone over the age of 1 year living in or traveling to Asia. This vaccine is given in 2 doses 6 months apart. As with the Hepatitis B vaccine, this vaccine is very safe and should be boosted every 10 years.

4. Typhoid Fever

Typhoid is a water/food born illness causing fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea and occasionally even death. This is a good vaccine for life in Asia. There is an oral vaccine available for children over 6 years old and adults. This vaccine lasts 5 years. The injectable vaccine is suitable for children from age two and up including adults and lasts 3 years.

5. Rabies

Rabies is a fatal viral illness transmitted by animal bites. In Europe and North America it is present in the wild animal population but is rarely found in domestic animals. In China rabies is common in the local dog population. This vaccine is strongly recommended for families with dogs or cats as pets. It is also an important vaccine for all children as they are the most likely group to come in contact with local puppies or kittens.

6. Japanese Encephalitis

This is an extremely serious viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquitoes pick up the virus from biting infected pigs or ducks and then pass it on to humans. It is a common illness throughout rural SE Asia although extremely rare in large cities like Shanghai. Expats traveling to rural areas in SE Asia, or living on the outskirts of large cities, should consider this vaccination. Talk to your physician about whether this vaccine is right for you.

7. Tetanus

Tetanus is a disease caused by bacteria that are commonly found in soil. Humans are infected through contaminated wounds. You need a routine booster every 10 years. If you have a particularly risky wound and it has been over 5 years since your last vaccination, your doctor should give you a booster at the time of your visit.

8. Polio

Assuming you had a full series as a child, all adults need a single booster dose after the age of 21.

This is just a brief look at a number of important vaccinations that can help you stay healthy in Shanghai and may even save your life. Your doctor should be able to help you decide which of these are right for you and your family.
