A terrible thing happened in Shanghai on the last day of the year. A stampede(踩踏) killed at least 36 people and 47 during New Year’s Eve celebrations on the Bund(外滩).
The Shanghai government said that large crowds started the stampede just before midnight. It was not clear so far what caused the stampede. Xinhua said many of the injured were students.
Before the New Year’s Eve celebrations, the city had thought of possible problems. And the city government also did what they could to stop things like this. But the terrible thing still happened suddenly. They recently canceled(取消) an annual- 3D laser(激光) show on the Bund.
