Unit 1 Hello, Hi!
Grammar: Basic Sentence Structures
There are 3 basic sentence structures in English.
1. Subject + Predicate +( Object) + (Adverbial)
e.g. Animals can’t speak.
Mrs. Green smiles kindly.
The boy is greeting his teacher.
I gave him a visiting card.
She loves dogs very much.
2. Subject + Link verb + Predicative
e.g. Self introductions are important.
3. There be- Structure
e.g. Is there anything wrong?
Notes:
1. The first sentence structure (Subject + Predicate) seldom appears. It
often expresses the attribute of creatures. Intransitive verbs usually act as the predicate.
2. All sentence structures are flexible, e.g. Adverbials may appear at the
very beginning of a sentence.
3. “There be” is followed by the subject. The forms of “be” should change
with the subject.
