★ Spectacular value!
By Marissa McRoberts on November 29
The typical price per piece of Lego has been slightly more than $10 since 2005. At $101 for 160 pieces, this set is about $ 0.6 per piece. It is a great deal.
But there are some downsides: no wheels, bushes, trees, grass, technic elements and that sort of thing. This is otherwise a fantastic starter set.

I got this set as a Black Friday deal for an amazing $30! I wanted 2 sets but they were gone before I could even get my hands on one. A very nice man gave me a spare that he grabbed. It’s huge, strong and well-made. The box is about 2 feet tall and is strong enough for a storage option. I will absolutely be looking to get another set one day!

Should universities focus on training workers for the next decade or curing diseases for the next century?
A group of governors, educators, and CEOs discussed the best way universities can prepare for the future. They debated how the U.S. can take the responsibility for research while still preparing students for real jobs.
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin said that the first thing she thinks about as governor is educating Oklahoma students and strengthening the workforce. So she’s carrying out a program called “America
Works: Education and Training for Tomorrow’s Jobs” that aims to “reorganize our education system with the current needs of our employers”.
The state governor added that this new educational approach doesn’t just benefit students and companies, but also improves the state economy. “We’ve been able to attract new companies to our state because of what we’re doing with our universities, because our students are a pipeline for the workforce,” she said. “General Electric Company (one of the world’s biggest companies) is coming to Oklahoma.”
Other group members were more focused on the long-term goals of a research university. Amy Gutmann pointed out that “basic research is the foundation for everything else that happens at a university. And if we don’t do it, nobody else will.”
“And if nobody does that research, we’ll pay the price in health care bills,” argued Vagelos, who is a former CEO of Merck & Co., Inc, one of the largest pharmaceutical (制药的) companies in the world. “The jobs of universities are basic research, which is what is needed for attacks on disease,” he said. “There has 冠心病) by 60% in the last forty years because of this research, and that reduces health care costs.”
James Hunt, former North Carolina governor, argued for a happy medium. Effective communication, he said, would help the public see that the research conducted at universities actually serves a practical purpose.
Eli Broad, founder of the Broad Foundations, agreed. “We have to show the public what research has achieved,” he said. “We have to show how it actually goes from basic research to something they can understand.”
24. Why does Oklahoma appeal to General Electric Company?
A. University graduates in the state are well trained.
B. There’s much support from the local government.
C. Many students in the state hope to be workers.
D. The state economy has been growing rapidly.
25. What is Gutmann’s attitude toward Fallin’s program?
A. Curious. B. Tolerant. C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic.

Marc had worked in the city hall’s engineering department for so long that the city was laid
out in his mind like a map, full of names and places. And then something happened that filled him with shock.
One August afternoon,he discovered a card saying GREEN BOTTLE STREET at the back of the drawer. He checked the listed details. It was not there. It was a lost,a forgotten street, which existed in the heart of Montreal, not half a mile from city hall, and no one had known. He put the card in his pocket and the next day he went looking for the street with beating heart.
At his first glance,Marc realized how it had gotten its unusual name.It was exactly like a
bottle in shape. With the sun shining on the garden plots, and the blue sky overhead, the street gave him a sense of peace.A woman some sixty years of age was watering roses in the garden of the first house to his right.
He announced,“I'm from the city engineering department, madam.”
The woman recovered herself and set her watering can down.
“aid.“We paid our taxes and made out a lot of forms
and answered the questions of various officials. Then, after a while, we were sent no notices,so we paid no more taxes. No one bothered us at all.It was a long time before we understood that in some way they’d forgotten about us.”
Marc nodded.Of course,if Green Bottle Street had been ignored by the city hall,no
inspectors would go there,no tax collectors. All would pass merrily by.
“For several years, the tenants(租户) here had lived in harmony with each other and the
landlord. The owner became so attached to them that he gave them all he had when he died.I
have lived here for more than twenty years.I hope to end my days here as well.”
She smiled pleasantly at him, apparently forgetting for the moment that he carried in his
pocket a bomb that could blow their little world to pieces.
“You remind me of my nephew,” she said suddenly.“He was a dear boy.I was heartbroken when he died.I’m the last of my family, you know.”
Marc thought of his noisy and violent landlady and neighbors. He could not recall when he had been spoken to with such simple goodwill. His heart warmed to this old lady.“I wonder,” he said slowly, “I am a good tenant, and I wonder…”
“Oh yes,”she leaned forward eagerly, “you could have the top floor of my house.I'm sure it would suit you.”
Marc took the card out of his pocket and tore it across and dropped the pieces in the
watering can.As far as he was concerned,Green Bottle Street would remain forgotten forever.

29.What can we know about Green Bottle Street from the passage?
A.It would be renamed very soon. B.It existed for at least 20 years.

30. A.carried a bomb in his pocket B.hated inspectors and tax collectors

Taking photographs at a birthday or a wedding has become as natural as blowing out candles or cutting the cake. But our inappropriate interest in recording every detail of our happiest moments could be damaging our ability to remember them, according to a new research. A study has shown that taking pictures rather than concentrating fully on the events in front of us prevents memories taking hold.
Dr. Linda Henkel, from Fairfield University, Connecticut, described it as the “photo-taking impairment
effect”. She said, “People often pull out their cameras almost mindlessly to capture a moment, to the point where they are missing what is happening right in front of them. When people rely on technology to remember for them — counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves — it can have a negative impact on how well they remember their experiences.”
Dr. Henkel and her team carried out an experiment in a museum to learn if taking pictures of the exhibits was preventing the ability of visitors to remember what they had seen.
A group of university students were led on a tour at the Bellarmine Museum of Art at Fairfield University and were asked to either photograph or try and remember objects on display. The next day their memory was tested. The results showed that people were less accurate in recognizing the objects they had photographed than those they had only looked at. It was found that their memory for the details of the objects they had photographed was poorer.
Henkel’s lab is currently investigating whether the content of a photo, such as whether you are in it, affects memory. She is also researching whether actively choosing what to photograph might influence what we remember.
Previous research suggests that reviewing photos we have taken does help us remember objects, but only if we take the time.
“Research has suggested that the pure quantity and lack of organization of digital photos for personal memories discourages many people from accessing and recalling them. In order to remember, we have to access and interact with the photos, rather than just collect them,” said Dr. Henkel.
32. What is the “photo-taking impairment effect”?
A. Some unhappy events may impair the effects of photos.
B. Taking photographs of objects ruins one’s memory of them.
C. The effects of photos are strongly affected by bad cameras.
D. Memories last forever when people take the photos they like most.
33. What can we learn about Dr. Linda Henkel’s study?
A. A group of high school students were involved.
B. The memory of participants was tested the following week.
C. People who just looked at the objects remembered fewer details.
D. People who photographed objects were worse at recognizing them.
34. With which of the following may Dr. Linda Henkel agree?
A. Reviewing photos improves memories of objects.
B. Focusing on people at events is the best way to remember.
C. Relying on technology to remember affects the memory.
D. Counting on cameras to record events is always reliable.
35. The passage is probably taken from _____________.
A. a health magazine B. a cultural overview
C. an economics report D. an entertainment website

Wrong Reasons for Going to College
A college education can be priceless. If any of these following factors have a big influence on your decision, you’re probably right to second-guess yourself.
Because all your friends are going.
In only a few weeks’ time, the whole friend group will be scattered to a half dozen different colleges in a half dozen different places. Not to go will set yourself apart. Because someone else expects it from you.
Perhaps you come from a family where everyone goes to college, or maybe you’re the kid that everyone is proud to believe will be the first to get there. It’s become so much a part of the air you breathe that you’ve never stopped to consider whether you want to go or whether you’re ready to go. It’s been tough to find even a summer job. You don’t have an alternative plan. Everyone else is doing it (see above). You think you might as well go to school. That is the lamest(无说服力的)of reasons to spend $ 20,000 or more in the next year.
Because you are afraid you’ll regret it if you don’t go.
Your uncle tells you that he regrets that he didn’t go to college. Others tell you they could have gone so much further in their career if only they had a college education. So this is not a persuasive reason for you to go to college.
A. Because you don’t want to work.
B. Friends will wonder what’s wrong with you.
C. Because you don’t know what else to do.
D. Everyone seems more excited than you are.
E. It seems that for years everyone has just thought that of course you’ll go.
F. Whatever the story is, there are always people who regret decisions they’ve made.
G. But maybe in your heart you know that you are going for the wrong reasons.

My way of spending my free time
Everyone has different ways of spending his or her free time. As for me, I usually do reading when I have free time. Most of the time, I read alone. I think through reading, I can discover the beauty of the world. Through reading, I have made friends with the Three Little Pigs, Snow White, Red Riding Hood, and so on. Since then, reading has become an important part of my life. Books, magazines or newspaper are very handy to carry around with. The smallness of size and the lightweight of reading materials made it very convenient for me to put them into my handbag. Moreover, I can read whenever and wherever I choose to. Even during an interval of time, like waiting for a bus or at break time in school.
In short, doing reading when I am free can broaden my horizons, make me happy and help me relax.
